Contamination and abrasion – cassette seals are the solution for multiple sealing applications and demanding environments.
Rotary cassette seals, also known as cartridge seals or labyrinth seals, are advanced sealing solutions designed for demanding rotating applications, particularly in automotive, agricultural machinery, and heavy industry. They are widely used in tractor axles navigating sandy and muddy terrain, leaving a thick trail of dust contaminating the entire system.
These cassette seals are integrated and combine multiple sealing lips made of rubber or polymers such as nitrile, Viton, or PTFE with a robust metal housing, providing superior protection against fluid leakage and the intrusion of contaminants such as dust, mud, or water. Their compact, pre-assembled design ensures reliable sealing and effective pre-lubrication, even under extreme conditions such as high speeds, intense vibrations, or corrosive environments. Cassette seals are ideal for wheel bearings, axles, and other rotating systems subject to high stress.
This is also the case with ‘COMBI’ seals which seal against the shaft, but incorporate a lip which is much more robust than what a standard sealing ring can offer.
Whether you need a specific size, a material suitable for extreme temperatures, experience unusual abrasion, aggressive chemicals, or need a design for specific dynamic loads, our expertise allows us to design cassette seals in several configurations and materials. For a robust and durable sealing solution ensuring continuous operations, trust the know-how of ELASFOR for your cassette seals.
Why switch to a cassette seal?
Increased protection against contamination
Unlike a standard oil seal, which has only one primary lip to retain the lubricant and a secondary lip to block out impurities, the cassette seal incorporates several sealing lips and sometimes a internal labyrinth composed of 4, 5, 6 contact points and even more. This multi-lip system prevents contamination from abrasive particles, mud, water, or dust, especially in agricultural, industrial, or heavy-duty applications. By reducing contamination, the cassette seal significantly extends the life of bearings and rotating shafts.

Better dimensional stability and simplified assembly
The modular design of the seal, consisting of a closed metal assembly containing a stator portion fixed against the outside portion of the groove and a rotor portion which rotates with the shaft, guarantees perfect alignment between the sealing lips and the contact surface (consult us for the installation method!). This reduces the risk of incorrect assembly, premature wear or leakage. In addition, since the friction surface is integrated into the seal itself, the quality of the surface finish when machining the shaft becomes less critical.
Extended service life
Thanks to their sealed design and excellent internal lubrication management, they reduce friction and minimize grease loss. These seals are pre-lubricated! This results in reduced maintenance intervals and production downtime, contributing to a lower total cost of ownership.
