Choosing the gasket

Set the style, then the material. Ring-style (RF) sits inside the bolt circle with no bolt holes, for raised-face flanges. Full-face (FF) matches the flange OD and is drilled to the bolt pattern, for flat-face cast-iron and low-pressure piping. Spiral-wound — formed metal winding and graphite filler with a solid centering ring, to ASME B16.20 / B16.47, WR or WRI (inner ring) for high pressure and thermal cycling.

Sheet materials (with equivalents)

  • Aramid/NBR (eq. Durlon 8500 / Blue-Gard 3000 / Teadit NA1001) — the everyday sheet: water, air, mild oils and chemicals, 103 bar, to 287 °C continuous.
  • NBR 60 Sh (Buna-N) — standard oil- and fuel-resistant rubber sheet, to 120 °C.
  • SBR 75, Neoprene 60, EPDM 60 — water/air/dilute chemical, weather/ozone, and steam/glycol duty respectively. EPDM never with hydrocarbons.
  • FKM/Viton 70 Sh — oils, fuels, solvents and mild acids at temperatures NBR and EPDM will not survive, to 180 °C continuous.
  • Virgin PTFE — near-inert, −200 to +260 °C, ~69 bar; re-torque for cold flow.
  • Expanded PTFE (eq. Durlon 9600) — conforms to warped, pitted or glass-lined flanges at low bolt load, 200 bar.
  • Filled PTFE (eq. Durlon 9000N / Gylon 3504 / Tealon TF1570) — strong acids and oxidisers, 103 bar, better creep resistance than unfilled.
  • Silicone 60 Sh — FDA-friendly, wide temperature; not for oil or fuel.
  • 316SS / graphite spiral-wound (eq. Durlon SWG Graphite) — steam and hydrocarbon processing, to 510 °C continuous, 250 bar.
